Insulin Administration for QMAs

This Insulin Administration for QMAs course follows the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) curriculum and prepares you for the secured Insulin Administration Exam. Successful completion of the written exam grants you a QMA-Insulin Administration certification—only then are you permitted to administer insulin in a facility. You must be an active QMA in Indiana and be employed at a facility with a Registered Nurse to complete your practicum hours.

Class Details

Course Details

Total Length: 8 hours of instruction, split into:

  • 5 hours of classroom education (lecture, demonstrations, and discussion
  • 3 hours of hands-on lab training with our QMA Program Director

Skills Check:

Achieve 100% accuracy on both insulin administration skill checklists (syringe and insulin-pen techniques) before proceeding to clinical practicum.

Clinical Practicum:

After completing the 8-hour classroom/lab portion, you’ll spend 2–4 hours administering insulin under direct RN supervision at your employing facility. If no RN is on staff, you cannot complete practicum there.

  • All required textbooks, handouts, and lab supplies
  • Background-check fee, course materials, lab supplies, and testing fee

Tuition & Payment Policies

Total Cost:

$350 per student (includes background check, course materials, labs, and testing fee).

Deposit:

$100 non-refundable deposit due at registration to reserve your spot.

Remaining Balance:

$250 due at orientation. Tuition must be paid in full before class begins.

Payment Methods:

Money order, cashier’s check, or credit card (a $10 processing fee applies to credit-card payments).

Exam Remediation:

If you do not pass the written exam on your first attempt, Legacy Medical Academy will provide a 2-hour remediation session at no additional charge.

Requirements for Enrollment

  • Active Indiana QMA certification (must be on the state registry with your QMA number)
  • Employment at a long-term care or assisted living facility with a Registered Nurse on staff
  • Facility’s Insulin Administration policy for QMAs (must submit a copy)
  • Photo ID and Social Security card (must be presented at orientation)
  • All paperwork (ID, SS card, facility policy) must be turned in before attending class; you cannot participate without these documents

Course Schedule

Frequency:

Offered on the last Monday and Wednesday of each month (end-of-month cohort).

Day 1 (Lecture & Demo): Monday, 8 AM–2 PM

  • Overview of ISDH insulin curriculum for QMAs
  • Pharmacology review (types of insulin, onset/duration/peak)
  • Safe practice guidelines, infection control, documentation requirements
  • Demonstrations: drawing up insulin with a syringe and using an insulin pen

Day 2 (Skills Lab): Wednesday, 9 AM–12 PM

Hands-on practice: Each student must perform both syringe and insulin-pen administration with 100% accuracy to advance to practicum.

Clinical Practicum & Exam

Practicum Hours:

2–4 hours total, completed under your facility’s RN supervision.

When to Schedule Practicum: 

After passing the 8-hour classroom/lab portion, coordinate scheduling directly with your facility’s RN.

State Exam:

  • Upon completion of practicum, submit completed paperwork to Legacy.
  • Legacy will coordinate your appointment with a state-approved testing partner to schedule the 25-question multiple-choice written exam.
  • You must achieve an 88% (allowing up to three incorrect answers) to pass.
  • You have up to 12 months from your practicum completion date to sit for and pass the exam. If you do not pass within 12 months, you must retake the entire course.

Registry Update:

Once you pass the state exam, the Insulin Administration sub-type will appear on your QMA certification in the Indiana registry. You may not administer insulin until that sub-type is active on your record.

Recertification

Cycle:

Every 2 years, concurrent with your QMA recertification.

Prerequisite:

Renew your CNA certification before renewing your QMA-Insulin Administration sub-type.

Inservice Requirements (per calendar year):

  • 1 hour of in-service training specific to insulin administration for QMAs
  • 6 hours of QMA in-service training (general)
  • Note: Legacy Medical Academy does not provide in-service training. You must complete these hours at your long-term care or assisted living workplace.

No charge to renew your Insulin Administration sub-type or QMA certification.

Important Reminders

Bring your facility’s Insulin Administration policy for QMAs, photo ID, and Social Security card to orientation—failure to provide these will prevent class attendance.

Practicum can only be completed if a registered nurse is available to supervise at your facility.

If you fail the state exam within your 12-month window, contact Legacy to schedule your remediation session before retaking the exam.
